Prepping for 2023 Resolutions

Hi Byte Wellness Fam!

How are you doing? And how are you feeling?

Feels, to me, like we’re hurtling toward a new year. While we tend to link the new year with new health and wellness resolutions, we don’t have to wait until 2023 to start working on our wellness goals. In fact, it’s not too early to start the process of goal-setting now.

If that sounds ridiculous, just think about it. The first step in setting new goals is reflection.

In this week’s #PhyteWellWednesday Workshop, we did just that. We started the hour reflecting on our experience in the Slash Added Sugars Challenge. But, by the end of the workshop, we realized that identifying added sugars means so much more to us than calories and glycemic index.

We talked about how, as Black women in the U.S., knowing what’s in our food and what it does for us is an essential form of power.

Power is being able to think beyond the marketing labels that call foods “healthy” despite their added sugars and lack of micronutrients. Power is understanding what our body and brain needs from us.

That power multiplies when we use our knowledge to make informed decisions about what to eat based on our health risks and wellness goals.

Informed decisions are power. Let that sink in for a moment.

All that (and more) came from our 1-hour reflection. If you missed this week’s workshop, you can watch the recording below. Plus, find more recordings inside our private PhyteWell community here. If you want an invite to next week’s workshop, (or you want to invite someone to join) text LOVE to 1(224)302-6224.

Okay, what do we reflect on as we prepare to set wellness goals? Everything and anything.

For example, in order to name our wellness goals, we need to be in touch with our deepest desires for our lives.

So, who do we want to be?

  • Someone with enough energy to conquer the day?

  • Someone who’s calm and grounded in the face of stress?

  • Someone who can move and play with our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews?

What do we want for ourselves?

  • To break family disease patterns and prevent unnecessary pain and suffering? ?

  • To feel more freedom with the food we eat?

  • To feel at home in our bodies?

Don’t forget to think through the discussion question below:

Discussion Question

  • What did you learn about yourself this month when you tried to shift from added sugars toward whole sugars?

When it comes to shifting wellness habits (especially eating), introspection is key. Everything’s on the proverbial table here. Think back to food preferences you might have established in childhood. What about wellness beliefs that you’ve picked up more recently?
